Music and Meditation

Music is a really big part of the classes we offer.  We use soulful, meditative music as an adjunct to the meditation exercises. The  “Flute Music for Meditation” album by Sri Chinmoy has been used by countless seekers for over forty years now.  When Sri Chinmoy performed he was always in a meditative, peaceful consciousness.  The peace that flows through Sri Chinmoy’s music immediately changes the vibration of a room and enables you to relax and enjoy your own highest meditation.

Sri Chinmoy: “In the twinkling of an eye, music can elevate our consciousness.”

Below are a couple of videos of Sri Chinmoy’s flute performances.  Why not take some time for yourself right now, find a comfy seat and sit back and allow this music  carry away all your mental worries and help you reconnect with your heart-home.

“Soulful music is the music that wants to eventually transform our consciousness. It carries us into the Universal Consciousness and makes us feel that we are in tune with the highest, with the deepest, with the farthest.”   Sri Chinmoy

During his lifetime Sri Chinmoy performed over 770 free Peace Concerts in countries all around the globe.  In Australia, Sri Chinmoy performed multiple concerts in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.  In 1995, Sri Chinmoy was invited by the then Prime Minister, Mr Paul Keating, to come to Australia to perform a Peace Concert in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra to honour the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations.

Sri Chinmoy is likely the most prolific composer of all time, composing a staggering 23,000 + spiritual songs during his lifetime. If you are a musician or a musician wannabe be sure to check out:  where you can download his songs to perform yourself as part of your own meditation practice.  Or download for free countless performances by Sri Chinmoy and his students at:

Many of Sri Chinmoy’s students are world-class musicians and perform Sri Chinmoy’s songs exclusively.   In Europe particularly there are a number of groups that travel the globe to share the beauty and majesty of Sri Chinmoy’s music.

Blue Flowers, an all-female vocal and instrumental ensemble, mostly from Serbia, Germany and the Ukraine, are one of our favourite groups and we are hoping they will perform in Australia sometime very soon. 🙂  Until then feel free to sit back and enjoy some of their performances…

Here is a stunning live concert they recently gave in Austria.

Sri Chinmoy speaking about music:

“Meditation and music cannot be separated. When we cry from the inmost recesses of our heart for Peace, Light and Bliss, that is the best type of meditation. We cannot meditate twenty-four hours a day, but we can meditate, say, for two hours a day. Then we can play music or we can listen to music for a couple of hours a day. Next to meditation is music. But it has to be soulful music, the music that stirs and elevates our aspiring consciousness. When we play soulful music, psychic music, then immediately we are transported to the highest realm of consciousness. When we play music soulfully, we go high, higher, highest.”

Question: What does ‘soulful’ mean in relation to music?

Sri Chinmoy:When we listen to soulful music, or when we ourselves play soulful music, immediately our inner existence climbs up high, higher, highest. It climbs up and enters into something beyond. This Beyond is constantly trying to help us, guide us, mould us and shape us into our true transcendental image, our true divinity. When we hear soulful music, or when we play a soulful piece of music, we feel a kind of inner thrill in our entire existence, from the soles of our feet to the crown of our head. A river is flowing through us, a river of consciousness, and this consciousness is all the time illumined.”

Below a couple of recordings from Sri Chinmoy’s Peace Concerts.

This video is a Concert he gave in Germany.

This Peace Concert was in Italy.

This group performing below are another favourite.  Shindhu are a group based in the United Kingdom.   They perform the compositions of Sri Chinmoy with such a haunting quality.   They might become one of your favourites too. 🙂

Another group, Temple Song Hearts are based in London.   They perform songs Sri Chinmoy  composed in his native language; Bengali,  Sanskrit and English.

The words from the second song from this Temple Songs Heart album  are so beautiful.   “My gratitude-heart always knows the way.   My oneness-perfection always is the way.”  Sri Chinmoy

This album (above) is by Arthada and Friends.  A group of Sri Chinmoy’s students, many based in Vienna, Austria.  Enjoy and sing along with them if you please. The lyrics are at the bottom of the screen.

Below is a concert Arthada (who is pictured second from the left) and Friends gave in Bulgaria.  May this beautiful music meditate for you.
